Half-off admission on Sundays this summer at ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i

Hilo, Hawai‘i – Find the best deal in town and enjoy everything ‘Imiloa has to offer at a stellar rate – half off! Explore exhibits, planetarium shows with 3D stereoscopic capabilities, and Science on a Sphere (SOS) with a new perspective of the Earth and Moon. Every Sunday from now through the end of August, the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i is offering half-off admission.

On Sundays, general admission will be just $8.75, admission for children 4-12 will be $4.75, and children under 4 will continue to be free. Kama‘aina rates are also available. For kama‘aina families (with proof of residency), general admission will be $6, and admission for children 4-12 will be $3.50.

With the price of admission on Sundays, guests may enjoy two of the three current planetarium shows: Awesome Light: Discoveries from the Telescopes of Maunakea – in stereoscopic 3D shown at 2 p.m., the new planetarium show Seven Wonders shown at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., or the 11 am signature show Maunakea: Between Earth and Sky. Admission provides access to the full range of ‘Imiloa’s exhibits and gardens.

All summer long guests can also enjoy talks on various topics such as Hawaiian culture, presentations, starlines, invasive species, etc. every Wednesday at noon.

“Half-priced Sunday admission gives everyone a chance to experience the ways in which Hawaiian culture and technology come together,” said Ka‘iu Kimura, associate director for ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i. “We perpetuate the Hawaiian culture by sharing authentic historical perspectives and cultural beliefs with our guests. It is also important to explore the new astronomy findings happening daily at the observatories atop Maunakea.”

The ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i explores the stars through the lenses of both Hawaiian culture and astronomy. It offers various educational exhibits, including Origins, about the different perspectives on where we come from, and Voyages, exploring how discoveries have been made in the past with canoes and now with modern technology. Its award-winning landscaping also offers a glance at a native Hawaiian ecosystem.

About ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i

‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i weaves today’s newest astronomy findings and Hawai‘i’s cultural heritage into a compelling story of star exploration. The Center features more than 100 exhibits within its 12,000-square-foot exhibit hall. It is one of the first discovery centers in Hawai‘i to incorporate both Hawaiian and English languages to enhance the cultural and learning experience. Located on nine acres of lush ethno-botanical gardens in Hilo on Hawai‘i’s Big Island, the Center’s 40,000-square-foot facility opened to the public in February 2006. Visitors can enjoy the planetarium, exhibit halls, learning center, café and museum store. It is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays (closed Mondays).
