Overnight Photo Seminar Explores Kahuku

08/19/2009

(Volcano, HI – August 10, 2009)
The Hawai‘i Volcanoes Institute, in cooperation with Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park (HVNP), offers a special overnight photo seminar and camp-out. This “Kahuku Photo Expedition” takes place on the weekend of August 22 and 23 and is led by photographers David Boyle, Amos Meyers, and Charlene Meyers.

“Together, they’ll help you learn (and share) photographic techniques with shutterbugs of all skill levels,” notes Institute Coordinator Brian Lux. “Combine your interest in photography with a special opportunity to visit the Park’s Kahuku section. This overnight camping excursion promises unique photo opportunities, good food, and fun for all!”

The program begins at Kahuku on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. After checking in, pitching camp, making introductions, and completing invasive species protocols and safety briefings, participants travel to the exclosure #4 area. An afternoon photo session includes plants, reforestation, and the 1926 lava flow, followed by an optional photo review via laptop, with evaluation and recommendations by photo guides. After dinner, participants hike to the sunset photo area atop the cinder cone in the ranch house area, then return for a campfire program with HVNP Chief of Interpretation Jim Gale.

On Sunday, an optional sunrise photo session begins the day. Participants can then continue to shoot the area in early morning light and look for wildlife in the meadows and birds in the trees. A continental breakfast precedes an optional morning photo shoot review (using laptop presentations) and breaking camp. The program ends at 11 a.m. when campers depart Kahuku.

David Boyle has volunteered as a photographer for the National Park Service for many years and sells his work on his website and in gift shops. Charlene and Amos Meyers are dedicated HVNP volunteers and photographers who, along with Boyle, have hosted many Kahuku photographic expeditions. Charlene operates her own photographic image business, and Amos has assembled stunning CD collections showcasing the photographs submitted by previous expedition participants.

The “Kahuku Photo Expedition” is sponsored by the Hawai‘i Volcanoes Institute, a program of the Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. The cost for the two-day program is $65 for Friends’ members and $85 for non-members, which includes Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast. A list of what to bring, carpooling options, and invasive species protocols will be provided after registration. To make reservations, call 985-7373 or email admin@fhvnp.org.
